Here are some of the most spectacular beaches in Greece. Have you ever visited any of them?
Navagio Beach
Navagio Beach also known as Shipwreck beach is considered the most beautiful beach in Greece. Breathtaking and isolated the beach is situated on the northwest coast of the Zakynthos island in Greece. There is no way to get on the Navagio beach on foot, the beach is only accessible by boat and the boat tours part from various parts of the island like Port Vromi and it takes only half an hour or from Zakynthos city port. It was named Shipwreck beach since in 1983 a ship named “Panagiotis” while smuggling cigarettes got wrecked here, but sometimes the beach is also called “Smugglers Cove”. It became one of the most photographed sites in Greece and it attracts thousands of tourist each year. Clear turquoise water that confines the white sand beach and this old rusty shipwreck surrounded by high cliffs give you a landscape that you will never forget.
Golden Beach
Golden beach is 1.5 km long sand beach near the town of Pylos (Peloponnese), that separates the sea water of the Bay and the waters of the Gialova Lagoon. It starts at Gialova and continues to Old Navarino Castel, an amazing 13th-century fortress. Clear blue water is calm and shallow, therefore also warm, what makes it a great place for families with young children. Nearby there are many other beautiful beaches like semi-circular Voidikilia beach, which has been voted one of the top ten beaches in the world by the New York Times in 2010. The beaches are very long, so there is enough room for everyone, but they are not equipped. The legend says it was Homer’s “sandy Pylos” where Telemachus was welcomed by King Nestor when searching for Odysseus, who was his father. Other than swimming, sunbathing or snorkeling, one can go cycling around the lagoon as well, hike up to the castle and enjoy some fantastic views of the lagoon and the Bay.
Red beach
Red Beach is definitely one of the most beautiful and impressive beaches of Santorini. The beach is situated in the southwestern part of the island, near the village of Akotiri. Volcanic, red and white sand beach enclosed between the cliffs with spectacular rock formations and clear waters offer you one of the most majestic and fascinating views difficult to find anywhere else. The only downside to this uniqueness is that in many want to visit it, so it can get too crowded and a lot of tourists choose not to go all the way down to the beach, but just admire this amazing place from the cliffs. The beach is easily accessible and it is fully equipped. If you enjoy snorkeling, this is the right place for you.
Elafonissi Beach
Crystal clear water, white sand with pink shades due to thousand of broken seashells and turquoise sea make the Elafonissi beach a perfect place to visit. Frequently called the Caribbean beach of the Mediterranean. The beach has in front of it, a small island of white sand dunes dotted with little bushes and sea lilies, separated from the shore by a lagoon less than a meter deep but connected with a sandy passage long 200 meters that depending on the tide is sometimes covered by the water. The beach is well equipped with beach chairs and umbrellas and there is a beach bar. The best way to reach the beach is by car or a boat. It is 73 km distant from the town of Chania and an hour of boat ride from Paleochora. The whole area is protected and it’s a place where the sea turtles Caretta reproduce. On the small island, there are also numerous little sandy beaches. On the beach, there is a memorial to 850 woman and children slaughtered in the fury of the Turks when hiding on the island in 1824.
Sarakiniko Beach
Sarakiniko is a beach located on the northeastern part of the Milos Island. It is one of the most particular beaches in Greece. The landscape is impressive and unique with white limestone rocks of unusual shape eroded by time and total absence of vegetation give the impression of being on the surface of the moon. In the daytime, the beach is breathtaking because of the contrast between the white rocks and clear turquoise sea which makes this landscape a surreal paradise. There is an abundance of small caves, pinnacles, small sandy coves as beautiful natural pools. This is truly a sight not to be missed.
